The Big Sisters Movement under the NGO Safe Hands for Girls is organizing the 1st African Summit on Female Genital Mutilations and Child Marriages, in Dakar, Senegal from 16th to 18th June 2019 at the King Fahd Palace Hotel.

The NGO is organizing the event in close partnership with the Ministry of Women, Family and Gender of the Republic of Senegal, and the Ministry of Women Affairs of the Republic of The Gambia and Al Azhar Al-Sharif.

The summit aims to draw further attention to FGM, Child Marriages through a broad mobilization of African heads of State, civil society leaders, youth, religious leaders, media, influencers and traditional leaders - whose growing commitment is already reversing these two practices - in a bid to end to FGM Child Marriages by 2030.

It is crucial that commitment to end FGM and CM is consistent from policy from global leaders, all the way through to leaders at village level. This change cannot be achieved through political means alone, but requires action from leaders from religious, traditional, media and grassroots arenas.

During 3 days, we will share, exchange and together create a new framework for discussion and dialogue between change agents and governments.

At least ten African heads of State and governments and 500 participants from Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan as well as United Nations agencies and the African Union and representatives from the donor community are expected in the Senegalese capital.
